Dead code

Code that exists in the codebase but can never be reached or executed under any condition.

In practice: Beyond wasted space, dead code is a maintenance hazard — someone will update it thinking it matters, or spend time understanding it during a refactor. Deleting it is almost always the right call, which is what version control is for.
